Episode #5 | Caroline Elleray - Head of A&R, Universal Music Publishing (UK)

Caroline Elleray started her career at Strawberry Studios, Stockport, where bands such as Happy Mondays and New Order recorded with Martin Hannett, managing World of Twist before starting her career in publishing.  One of Caroline’s earliest signings was Coldplay. The band also credit her with facilitating their signing to Parlophone / EMI Records. She signed Keane early in their career and after working with them for several years she helped them get a record deal with Island Records. Her friendship with Keane’s manager Adam Tudhope led her to another global success story when she signed coldplay, Mumford & Sons, Keane & Feist.

People won’t want you to be successful if you aren’t very nice.
— Caroline Elleray

Caroline signed Mark Owen shortly before Take That reformed – Mark penned some of their biggest singles including Shine. She signed Jamie N Commons and introduced him to label exec and producer Alex Da Kid. Subsequently Jamie has become one of the most sync’d artists on the UMP roster and featured with Jay-Z and Eminem all before releasing his debut album.

Caroline is always looking to the next generation of great artists and signed Rex Orange County before he’d released any music. The hotly pursued artist has toured with Frank Ocean, performed with Skepta at The Mercury’s aswell as featuring on Tyler The Creator’s album. Not to mention his own sold out shows and critically acclaimed releases.

As leader of Universal Music Publishing’s A&R team Caroline was closely involved in the signing of Bastille, The XX, Disclosure, Rae Morris, Sigala and Dua Lipa (via Tap).

She is widely regarded as one of the most artist friendly and well liked A&R’s in the business who has achieved success time and again.

A really honest conversation about how publishing has evolved and that quality that every successful artist seems to have coming directly from someone who’s passion for music is undeniable.
